What Do I Need To Know To Make A Crochet Headband?
You will need to know how to do a slip knot, chains, slip stitch, single crochet, and single crochet back loop only.
This pattern is a great way to practice your stitches if you are still learning!
What Supplies Do I Need To Crochet A Headband?
You will need a medium worsted size 4 yarn in a color that you like, scissors, and a size H/8 (5MM) crochet hook.
The yarn I used in the tutorial is 100% acrylic.

Optional: If you have a tape measure, you’ll want to use it when measuring the final headband length and width. No stress if you do not have one. If you are making the headband for yourself, you can measure the headband on yourself as you go through the written tutorial and make any necessary adjustments along the way.
Optional: If you have a yarn needle or a darning needle, you can use that too. However, you can use your crochet hook to weave in the ends. Use what you have.
Optional: Stitch markers to mark the end of the rows. You can also use a scrap of a different color yarn as a stitch marker.
How To Make A Ribbed Crochet Headband
Step 1. Make a slip knot and then chain 63.
63 chains is my go-to when I am making a headband. If you want a more fitted headband or a looser fit, then measure your head around and then make the number of chains you need to reach the same head measurement. However, I always use 63 chains as a “One Size Fits Most” measurement.
Step 2. Place one single crochet into the second chain from the hook. Repeat one single crochet in each chain for the rest of the row until you reach the end, then chain 1 and turn. If you are using stitch markers, place a stitch marker into the chain 1 you just made.

Step 3. Place one single crochet in the back loop only into the same chain 1 you just made. By only crocheting into the back loop, you will create the lovely ribbed feel and effect in the headband. Place one single crochet back loop only into each stitch to complete the row. When you reach the end of the row, chain 1 and turn. Add a second stitch marker into the chain 1 you just made. Add a single crochet back look only for the rest of the row. The stitch markers are the last stitches for each row. Take them out when you make the stitch, then replace the stitch marker in your new chain 1. If you are not using stitch markers, then count your stitches every few rows to make sure you are not gaining or losing any stitches.

Step 4. Continue step 3 for the rest of the rows until the headband measures 4 inches. When you get to the end of the last row, cut the yarn and leave a long tail. Pull the yarn through the loop to fasten off.

Step 5. Bring the left and right edges of the headband together, be sure the headband does not turn on you. Use your crochet hook (or yarn needle) and sew the edges together. If using your crochet hook, you might want to use a slip stitch all the way down until you get to the end, and the sides are attached. Knot the yarn and fasten off. Weave in the yarn and cut off any excess yarn.
Step 6: Turn the headband inside out so that the sewing stitches are now on the inside of the headband. Ta-da! Your ribbed headband is ready.
The end measurements are approximately 9 inches long and 4 inches high. There is a soft stretch to the ribbed headband, which helps make it “One Size Fits Most”.
Have fun when you are crocheting this easy beginner-friendly ribbed headband!
